The healthcare providers of All Women OB/GYN strive to support and encourage our patients in maintaining health and vibrancy in all stages of life. Due to increasing numbers of post-menopausal women and breast cancer survivors, vaginal atrophy is a condition we address on a daily basis.
Vaginal atrophy is caused by hormonal changes associated with menopause, cancer treatment and breast feeding. It is due to thinning, drying and inflammation of the vaginal walls and causes painful intercourse, urinary symptoms and feelings of irritation. In the U.S., as many as 50% of the 64 million post-menopausal women and over 2.8 million breast cancer survivors suffer from vaginal atrophy.
Unfortunately, this is not a condition that will improve spontaneously, and in fact, tends to worsen over time. Some women find partial relief with over-the-counter vaginal lubricants; these are most effective in women with symptoms limited to painful intercourse. Other women use estrogen therapy form symptom relief. If the only bothersome symptom of menopause is vaginal atrophy, then vaginal estrogens can be used to restore the vagina.
For women who want to avoid hormone exposure or cannot use hormones due to other medical conditions, the MonaLisa Touch® is an innovative laser procedure approved by the FDA to restore vaginal health. The MonaLisa Touch® delivers fractional carbon dioxide laser energy to the vaginal wall tissue to stimulate new collagen formation and resolve the atrophic changes. The procedure is performed in the office without the need for anesthesia and with virtually no pain or side effects. The initial therapy requires three treatments, six weeks apart, but after this, usually just one treatment a year will maintain the results.
