How do I prepare for a Glucose tolerance test?

1 hour test – No specific diet is required, just eat as you normally would.

3 hour test – Eat a balanced diet for at least 3 days prior to the test including an extra carbohydrate added to each meal.  Carbohydrates include: fruits, breads, cereals, rice, crackers, and starchy vegetables.

Do not eat, drink, smoke, or exercise strenuously for at least 8 hours before your blood sample is take.

Tell your doctor about all prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking.  You may be instructed to stop taking certain medicines before the test (i.e. glucophage)
